October in Snowmass

Make the Most of the Quiet Season in the Mountains

After a summer filled with travel, adventure, and the hot sun, it’s the perfect time to lean into the ease of late autumn in Snowmass before winter greets us with snow-capped peaks. Despite the slower fall season before winter, there is still plenty to do if you are interested in enjoying the calm before the snow starts falling. Make the most of your October visit to Snowmass!

#1: Hikes

While some of the leaves have already fallen, the mountains haven’t gone anywhere and are breathtaking year-round! Skyline Trail, Ditch Trail, and Rim Trail all offer impeccable, panoramic mountain views. The high peaks are often dusted with early season snow, offering a stunning contrast against Colorado’s signature bluebird skies.

# 2: Scenic Drives

If you prefer to admire the sights from the comfort of your car, take a drive on Owl Creek Road towards Aspen. This time of year, Owl Creek boasts our favorite views of Mt. Daly, as well as up the valley towards Aspen and Independence Pass. If you’re lucky, you might glimpse some elk in the meadows that span either side of the road.

#3: Mountain Biking

October is a great time for mountain biking. The Sky Mountain Park trails are often less crowded than in summer, and the air is the perfect temperature for comfortable riding. There are trails for all skill levels, so grab your bike and hit the trails for a workout with a view! Please note that e-bikes are not permitted in Sky Mountain Park.

#4: Wildlife Watching

Fall is an ideal time for wildlife enthusiasts to visit Colorado. Keep your eyes peeled for black bears, deer, elk, and various bird species. Bears are busy foraging for any food they can find as they gear up for winter, elk are in the middle of the rut (mating season), and many birds are preparing to migrate to warmer climates. Grab a pair of binoculars and head up Snowmass Creek to see what you can spot! Please remember the rule of thumb with wildlife: if you stick your arm in front of you and can’t cover the entire animal with your thumb, you are too close. Please be respectful of wildlife—we want to keep Snowmass a special place for everyone, including its furry and feathered residents!

#5: Stargazing

As a small mountain town, the light pollution in Snowmass Village is very limited, meaning the stars are more vibrant from our vantage point. Nights in western Colorado are getting longer and the stars are bright as ever as we approach the winter solstice. Grab a thermos of hot tea or cocoa and head outside with a blanket to spot shooting stars, your favorite constellations, and the Milky Way.

October in Snowmass, Colorado, is a magical time filled with quietude, stunning scenery, outdoor adventures, and community. Whether you’re hiking through the last of the autumn foliage or simply soaking in the breathtaking views from a cozy campfire, Snowmass Village is waiting for you to unwind and recharge for winter.
