About the Presentation: When you step into the world of edible and medicinal plants, you begin to see the bountiful gifts land has to offer—plants can be partners in our existence, not just expendable resources. The landscape of wild edible and medicinal plants in the Roaring Fork Valley is one of incredible depth and diversity. Through an exploration of the plants in our bountiful valley, we’ll reflect on how tending relationships with plants can foster reciprocity, stewardship, and a sense of belonging while deepening connection to land.
About the Presenter: Penelope Thornton is a former ACES naturalist with a speciality in herbalism and wild edible and medicinal plants. She graduated from Colorado College with a degree in Southwest Studies, focusing on ethnobotany and ecology. For her senior thesis, Penelope compiled her knowledge of edible and medicinal plants into a guidebook on the Wild Edible and Medicinal Plants of Central Colorado, which has grown into her life’s work and passion.
About the Presentation: Join us for an evening with Maz Krogh and Carly Valerious, some of the first women to complete the Elks Traverse. This route is approximately 50 miles and connects the 7 Fourteeners in the Elk Mountain Range. They’ll share stories and photos from the trail and reflections from their experience on the Traverse.
About the Presenters:
Maz is a ski instructor, physical therapist, and climate advocate, originally from Aotearoa New Zealand. She prefers snowy mountain adventures but has recently discovered that mountains without snow on them are pretty fun too.
Carly works in land stewardship and outdoor education, with passion for connecting with the natural world, and the people who inhabit it. She grew up running with her mom in the Midwest, and later discovered the world of trail and ridge running with her sister in the Wasatch Range. Carly graduated from Colorado College with a degree in Environmental Science. She enjoys printmaking, mountain biking, splitboarding, and exploring the backcountry in all seasons.
About the Presentation: Izzo will share her experience as a student with the Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP). Since 1946, JIRP has facilitated two months of immersive, hands-on glaciology research across the Icefield. Izzo will share about glaciological field methods, camp life and logistics, and hopefully answer the question: “Why study glaciers in a warming climate?”
About the Presenter: Izzo Steenrod is a Naturalist with ACES and lives at Toklat in the Castle Creek Valley. She studied geology at Colorado College and finds endless inspiration in the outdoors. Her passions for skiing, outdoor education, adventure, and earth science culminated into a summer spent on the Juneau Icefield.
About the Presentation: The Camino de Santiago in Spain has been established as a spiritual and physical pilgrimage for thousands of years. “Don’t Pack Your Fears,” is a story of finding faith in humanity, virtue, disco, and ultimately, oneself. If you’ve ever wondered, “what’s The Camino all about?,” this presentation is for you.
About the Presenter: Nellie Conboy is an artist and educator living and working in the Roaring Fork Valley. In both teaching and painting, her work is centered in light, imagination, and storytelling. Like Aspen, Nellie prides herself on being fiercely local and global. For the last two summers, Nellie has been an ACES educator and is honored to have the opportunity to connect with the ACES community again!
