Après, Elevated

Between last chair and dinner, options abound

Here’s a local tip:

Après ski doesn’t have to involve a stiff drink. When the lifts close, there are an abundance of options to fill the time between the ski hill and dinner. Soothe and stretch sore muscles with a yoga class or massage, burn off extra energy by skinning up the mountain for a beautiful sunset, or try something new like snowshoeing. Arrive at dinner feeling rejuvenated, rather than run-down.

Yoga

To stretch your hamstrings, quads, hips and all the other zones skiers and snowboarders particularly stress, grab a yoga mat and head to The Snowmass Recreation Center  or  King Yoga. You will find classes offering everything from warm ups to cool downs. Your body will appreciate the stretch and your mind will appreciate the transition time.

Uphill

If you’ve been cruising groomers with a partner who’s still learning or kids who needed multiple hot chocolate breaks, you might finish the ski day craving a cardio blast. If you’re new to the concept of skiing uphill, “skins” affixed to the bases of your skis, along with alpine touring bindings, work together to allow you to walk uphill. This popular activity sweeping ski resorts around the world allows participants access to skiing before, during, or after ski areas close. Snowmass permits uphilling from 5am-10pm. This year – during operating hours – uphill enthusiasts can choose from any of the five designated uphilling routes. The local favorite? The Sam’s Knob route ascending around 2,000 vertical feet to the top of the Village Express lift. This route takes most people between 45-90 minutes! Get acclimated with the winter 2022/23 designated routes and uphill policy before you head out!

Snowshoeing

Another activity to try, snowshoeing slows the pace to truly explore the beauty and vastness of Snowmass on foot. Rent gear from one of many sports retailers and venture out on Snowmass trails on your own, or join one of the guided tours led by an Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES) naturalist.

Spa

The most indulgent apres-ski activity might just be the ticket. After all, you are on vacation. After a long day on the mountain, soothe and care for tired muscles with a revitalizing afternoon at the spa. The Lupine Spa at the Viewline Snowmass offers everything from body wraps and scrubs to massages and facials. A visit to their inhalation therapy bar is also a great way to help with acclimation to the altitude. The Spa at Viceroy Snowmass offers a selection of holistic wellness experiences, from Ute Indian-inspired therapies to contemporary beauty rituals. Further relax with their infinity pool and soothing waterfall. Other spa options in Snowmass include the spa at The Snowmass Club and Alux Spalon in Base Village.

So, the next time you’re making plans for after the lift close at Snowmass, consider the other options that might make après your favorite time of day.
